About the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
The YouTube Thumbnail Downloader lets you save the thumbnail of any public YouTube video as a JPG file. Paste a link, and the tool shows every size YouTube stores for that video, from the full 1280×720 HD version down to the 120×90 icon. Pick the one you want and download it with a single click.
It works with standard watch links, youtu.be short links and YouTube Shorts links. Nothing is uploaded to us and nothing is watermarked: the image comes straight from YouTube, and the download button simply hands you the file instead of opening it in a new tab.

Frequently asked questions
What is the highest resolution YouTube thumbnail?
The largest thumbnail YouTube serves is the maxresdefault image at 1280×720 pixels (720p, 16:9). It is the same size YouTube recommends for custom thumbnails, so it is the best quality you can get for any video.
Why is the HD thumbnail missing for some videos?
YouTube only creates the 1280×720 version when the source image is large enough. Older videos, videos with an auto-picked frame, and uploads with a small custom thumbnail often stop at 640×480 or lower. When that happens YouTube returns a small grey placeholder instead, and this tool detects it and greys the HD option out rather than letting you download an empty image.
Does it work with YouTube Shorts links?
Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link exactly as you would a normal video link. Watch links (youtube.com/watch?v=), short links (youtu.be/) and embed links are all supported.
Is it free, and do I need to sign in?

Can I reuse a thumbnail I download?
